Reflection

It's near the end of our project. Through this journey, we have learnt how to adopt the practice in class into real situation to help a community. The following content is about our reflection:

Challenges & Constraints

Challenges & Constraints

1.Possibilities

(Beginning)

Due to the current virus outbreak, we turned our original by setting up a periodical bazaar (outdoor event) into an online event. However, we have no experience of setting up an event especially online. We were doubtful about the possibility of making this event successful because we lack experience, not sure how or where to start from scratch. As we aimed to reach 30 people on broad. Although we have set up our Instagram account, the no. of followers and our popularity was not promising enough to guarantee there will be at least 30 people join our event.

Reflection

1.Learn from Rejections

Although we got turned down from our guest, their opinions and suggestions were meaningful for us to restructure our prototype. The feedback from the Rooftop republic led us to put more focus on our social media platform Instagram, to make it more solid and popular to attract more followers and to create publicity in such a case. They also suggested we narrow down the topic of our event, to make our event more specific so that our audience could easier to follow and practice the content we opposed. Despite the rejections, we learned from our imperfections and gained knowledge from another start-up company that shared their past experiences. It helped us to spare time and make the content of our event more solid and concrete.

Reflection

Service-learning project sounds like volunteering for the minority, right? It did give me such a picture before joining the first class. I still remembered in the first lecture, Professor Zoe has emphasized the concept of design thinking in this course. I was wondering if this was a golden chance for me to practice my designing skills and innovation. And now, I can tell you "Yes, it did."

After I was settled in the promotion and marketing group, I was excited as I had related working experiences in my previous internship. Initially, I was confident in presenting my ideas and inspirations for the solution in the group. I thought mine was amazingly great for engaging the trend of teenagers. However, I found that involving design thinking into the real project was far more than innovation. Instead of talking in words, more importantly, it's the pieces of work that we build our campaign step by step. Through this project, I was able to work with the professional advisers in the marketing field and easing with the communities in need in a real situation, which inspired us to have an enhancement in our event. I could see my weakness in these practices when improvements were seen. Once I decided to drop this course due to the fear and anxiety about my performance as I didn't want to embarrass my groupmates and professor. However, with the encouragement from the advisers and professor, I finally calmed myself down and made such a successful event with my wonderful teammates.

Instead of a course, I would like to say this is a journey for my growth. When I look back on this track, I felt so grateful to have fantastic cooperation with different people. Apart from the design thinking techniques, communication with the different communities is the biggest lesson. There would not be so many chances for us to exchange culture and value with the US and Japanese students in other courses. This experience has made me wonder if I'm going to explore more service-learning projects with other communities or overseas in the rest of my college life.
